IoT Security & Privacy

GPS tracking brings valuable information to your fingertips. Understanding how connected devices, accounts and location data should be protected helps you use that technology with greater confidence.

What is IoT security?

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects everyday physical devices to networks so they can exchange information and deliver useful services.

GPS trackers are one example. Depending on the device and service, a tracker may use satellite positioning and cellular connectivity to help users view locations, receive alerts and review location history.

Because location information can be sensitive, security and privacy deserve attention at every stage—from the physical tracker to the network, supporting systems and the person accessing the account.

IoT security refers to the technologies, policies and habits used to reduce unauthorized access, data exposure, tampering and other risks. No connected system is completely risk-free, so responsible use and ongoing protection matter.

Important: The information on this page describes general IoT security principles. It is not a representation that every Trackimo Canada product implements every security measure discussed.

Five key layers of IoT security

Strong security is not a single feature. It requires several complementary safeguards working together.

1. Device protection

Device design and software safeguards help reduce risks from tampering, unauthorized changes and exploitable weaknesses.

2. Secure communications

Connected devices exchange information across networks. Appropriate transmission safeguards help protect data in transit.

3. Data & cloud protection

Services that store or process location data need appropriate access controls, operational safeguards and privacy practices.

4. Account access

Strong, unique passwords and careful management of who can access an account help prevent unwanted viewing of tracking information.

5. Updates & lifecycle

Ongoing maintenance, issue handling and security updates—where supported—are important throughout a connected product's useful life.

Privacy by responsible use

Track only where you have a lawful and appropriate reason. Respect consent, limit sharing and be mindful of location-history sensitivity.

Simple habits that make a difference

Many security risks start with compromised account credentials, unnecessary sharing or missed updates. These practical steps can help reduce your exposure.

Available settings vary by tracking device, companion app and service provider.

✓
Use a unique, strong account password.Avoid reusing passwords across services. Use multi-factor authentication if your service offers it.
✓
Keep your app and phone current.Install legitimate app and operating-system updates; follow manufacturer guidance for device updates.
✓
Review account and sharing access.Give tracking access only to trusted people who need it. Remove access when it is no longer required.
✓
Protect your phone and sign-in details.Use a screen lock, avoid sharing verification codes and sign out of shared devices.
✓
Use location tracking responsibly.Understand applicable consent and privacy requirements before tracking another person or their belongings.
✓
Respond promptly to unusual activity. If you suspect unauthorized account access, change credentials and contact the relevant product's support team.
Privacy matters
Location data deserves thoughtful protection.

Where a device has been, where it is now and who can view that information are meaningful privacy questions.

Know what you share. Know who can see it.

GPS location information may reveal routines, frequent destinations and other personal details. Before using any connected tracker, review the applicable service's privacy policy, account settings and data-sharing controls.

IoT security questions, answered

Is a GPS tracker the same thing as an IoT device?

Many modern GPS trackers are IoT devices because they collect location information and communicate it to an app or online service over a network. Features and connectivity methods vary by model.

Can someone access location data without permission?

Unauthorized access is a risk for any internet-connected service. Strong account security, appropriate system safeguards and careful sharing practices help reduce that risk, but no service can promise zero risk.

Does GPS tracking require an internet connection?

GPS positioning and sending location information are different functions. A tracker can determine its position using satellite signals, but reporting it to a remote app commonly depends on supported network connectivity. Behavior varies by device.

Do all Trackimo Canada products have identical security features?

No assumption should be made that different brands, models or apps use identical security controls. For product-specific information, consult the applicable manufacturer documentation or contact support.

What should I do if I suspect someone has accessed my tracking account?

Change your account password, secure the email account associated with it, review any available sharing or sign-in settings, and contact the support team for the specific tracking service.
